B-75 and cinnamon to my diet immediately. Glen Aukerman, MD at OSU Integrative Family Medicine I had to attend one of his nutrition seminar’s on Nutrition Principals. There he spoke a lot about different things and how all of our food changed starting in the 1. We were there for about an hour and a half and I don’t remember all the details of his seminar but I do remember him showing some very significant statistics about his research, methods and how many people he helped simply by looking at the deficiencies in their blood and helping correct them with food and vitamins. Dr. Auckerman’s Book. I made an appointment with his office the very next day. It took about 2 weeks to get an appointment which I felt was very reasonable based on the number of people in the seminar. It’s my opinion he uses the seminar as a way to weed out the people who don’t believe his methods or want him to just prescribe meds for the symptoms. This appointment day couldn’t come soon enough. It was like going to pick up a prize or something. I was finally going to get some answers. Aukerman walked in the room, I explained to him my symptoms. Now, let me explain something to you – this man sees MANY patients a day and what I really liked about his office was the fact they ran on time and were very efficient. Make sure you go to your appointments prepared with a list of questions and don’t dilly dally around. ![]() ![]() ![]() Some of the complaints I read about him online was that he didn’t take enough time with the patients and they felt rushed. I thought 3. 0 minutes was a perfect amount of time for a first appointment. Diagnosis #1 – The very first thing Dr. Aukerman noticed was my swollen glands on my neck. This is a key symptom of a thyroid problem. ![]() Hashimoto’s autoimmune Hypothyroidism causes more than 8. United States according to Dr. There is continuing research showing that Hashimoto’s can be caused by a gluten reaction of the immune system when people continue to eat gluten despite being intolerant or allergic. Signs or symptoms of Hashimoto’s can be Intolerance to cold, Difficulty concentrating or thinking, Weight gain, mild Fatigue, Constipation, Joint Stiffness, Dry Skin, Hair loss, Heavy and irregular menses, facial swelling and enlarged neck, small or large thyroid glad with presence of a Goiter. I had many of these symptoms plus I started to get gray hair at a very young age, dry brittle nails and hair and my hair was falling out incessantly. Diagnosis #2 – Celiac Disease. The Villi absorb vitamins and minerals but without them your body is unable to process and use them for strength and growth. The disease is often inherited. If you read my previous post on poop, you will see a trend here with the signs and symptoms of Celiac. People with Celiac often have intermittent diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating. It can also present as irritability, depression, upset stomach, joint pain, muscle cramps, gas, bloating, weakness, foul- smelling or gray stools that are fatty or oily, stools that float, osteoporosis and stunted growth. Complication of undiagnosed Celiac disease are malnutrition in spite of adequate diet vital nutrients, loss of calcium and bone density, kidney stones, lactose intolerance, cancer (especially intestinal lymphoma and bowel cancer), seizures and nerve damage. ![]() Diagnosis #3 – Latex Allergy from Fruit – Apparently, our bodies cannot tell the difference between latex from rubber and latex from fruits/vegetables. I never knew I had a latex sensitivity but this is another thing Dr. Aukerman noticed in looking at my face and chest. He noticed I had white lines on my neck and chest which is a sign of latex building up and and an allergy. So what fruits and vegetables have latex you ask? Oh only my favorite ones – Avocados, Bananas, Celery, Figs, Kiwi, Melon, Nectarines, Papaya, Cherry, Passion fruit, Plum, Chestnuts and Tomato. I hate tomato’s so they are the only one I really don’t care about. For more information about Latex in Food Allergies from the National Institute of Health CLICK HERE. After Dr. Aukerman gave me these preliminary diagnoses – he sent me over to OSU’s lab to have my blood drawn. He ran a ton of tests of me! I made a follow up appointment a week later. You will have to come back later this week to read about my test results and what is really wrong with me!!!! The tapeworm Genus Taenia comprises many different important species of tapeworm parasite infesting dogs, cats, humans, rodents and livestock animal species. Species of parasitic Taenia tapeworms important to human and animal medicine include: Taenia saginata (known as 'the beef tapeworm') - the adult form of the tapeworm resides in the human intestine(technically making it as much a human tapeworm as a 'beef' or cattle tapeworm) and the juvenile stage of the tapeworm (the stage of the tapeworm life cycle contagious to humans) resides in the muscles or meat of cattle (and to a lesser extent buffalos, llamas, giraffes, sheep, goats and certain deer species); Taenia solium (the pork tapeworm) - a very dangerous tapeworm species whose adult form resides in the human gut and whose lethal juvenile or larval form resides in the muscles and organs of pigs and people(this page contains loads of information on the dangerous Taenia solium pork tapeworm so read on); Taenia pisiformis - a canine tapeworm whose larval form is carried by rabbits and hares; Taenia ovis - a canine tapeworm whose larval form is carried in the muscles and hearts of sheep; Taenia taeniaeformis - a tapeworm in cats whose larval form is carried by rodents such as rats, muskrats and voles; Taenia hydatigena - a canine tapeworm whose larval form is carried by sheep, goats, pigs, cattle, deer and wild livestock ungulates; Taenia multiceps - a canid (dog and dog- related species) tapeworm whose larval form isgenerally carried in the brains of sheep and goats (occasionally horses, rabbits and cattle); Taenia crassiceps - a tapeworm of foxes or dogs whose juvenile stages are generally carried by rodent animals; Taenia serialis - a fox and dog tapeworm carried by rabbits, hares or rodents. Likewise, Taenia pisiformis: one of the two major 'rabbit tapeworms', will only infest canine species (definitive host) and rabbits (intermediate host). Having said this, despite there being vastly differing kinds of host animals involved in each of the Taenia species' life cycles, the overall two- host life cycle structure of the various Taeniid species does seem to be similar in all cases. For this reason, the different Taenia species can all be discussed using a common Taenia life cycle diagram, which is what I have chosen to do (see section 1). This Taenia tapeworm life cycles page contains a detailed, but simple- to- understand explanation of thecomplete Taeniid tapeworm life cycle. It comes complete with a full tapeworm life cycle diagram, which includesthe life cycles of each of the major Taenia species infesting dogs, cats, people, rodent and livestock animal species. A link to a small page on Taenia taeniaeformis tapeworms in cats. Taenia tapeworm life cycle diagram: This is a diagram of the life cycle of a typical Taenia tapeworm. The diagram shows the complete cycle of a Taeniid tapeworm's existence - from egg to adult tapeworm to egg again (with the next generation of tapeworm eggs) - within the bodies of two different, yet both equally essential, host animal species: 1. By following the arrows, you can see which species of intermediate and definitive host animals each of the different Taenia speciespredominantly infests. For example: Taenia ovis infests the sheep and the dog. Taenia hydatigena infests a variety of hooved livestock intermediate host species (cattle, sheep, pigs), as well as the dog (definitive host). I elected to insert Taenia multiceps only underneath the sheep intermediate host because, even though cattle, rabbits and horses can be intermediate hosts for this Taeniid species, the sheep is by farthe predominant intermediate host. For example, Taenia multiceps preferentially infests the brain of the intermediate host sheep, soinfested sheep could be expected to show signs of profound neurological disease (weakness, loss- of- balance, paralysis, circling, head- pressing, fitting, death). Knowing which intermediate host organs could carry the infective juvenile tapeworms is also important in preventing the definitive host animal from contracting adult tapeworms. If we know the intermediate host organs that must be consumed if the definitive host animal is to contract the adult tapeworms, then we can take steps to prevent such tapeworm transmission by preventing the definitive host animal from consuming such intermediate host body parts. For example, dogs catch the adult form of Taenia multiceps by eating the brains and muscles of infested sheep. These carnivorous host animals are termed definitive hosts with regard to their respective. Taenia tapeworm life cycles because they are the hosts that their parasitic Taenia tapeworm species was intended for and that the tapeworm organism reaches adulthood and sexual maturity in. For example, the human isthe definitive host animal for the Taenia solium and Taenia saginata tapeworms, not the dog nor the cat. The cat is the sole definitive host animal for Taenia taeniaeformis. The body of an adult Taeniid tapeworm is made up of hundreds to thousands of individual segments, termed proglottids. These segments progress in size and maturity as one travels down the tapeworm's body: ranging from very tiny (those proglottids nearest the scolex or 'head' of the tapeworm) right through to very large (easily seen with the naked eye). Tapeworms are hermaphrodites (bearing both male and female sex structures). Each proglottid segment has its owntesticular- type organ structure/s and its own uterine organ structure/s (for creating and maturing eggs)and every single proglottid is, therefore, capable of producing and fertilising its own set of eggs, once mature. The small- sized proglottids nearest the anchoring 'head' of the Taenia tapeworm are the most under- developed and immature of all the tapeworm's segments and are, consequently, incapable of creating fertile eggs because of their under- developed state. The large proglottids nearest the 'tail- end' of the Taenia tapeworm are the most mature of all the tapeworm's segments and are capable of having their eggs fertilized and matured into an embryo- bearing state. Author's note: because each individual proglottid segment can reproduce sexually on its own, some texts have described tapeworms as being almost like a colony (a large 'super- organism' made up of many individuals: each capableof living and reproducing without much assistance from the whole). Unlike a true colony, however, the individual reproductive segments of a tapeworm can not exist completely independently as individual units away from the whole. The individual tapeworm segments all rely on the survival and intestinal- attachment of the tapeworm's head if they are to remain within the definitive host animal and survive. Also, there is but one nervous system, under the control of the tapeworm head, linking all of the proglottids together in the tapeworm chain (i. Author's note: Because every individual proglottid contains both male and female sex organs, it is possible for a single proglottid to 'self- fertilise' (self- inseminate its own eggs). And thiscertainly does occur. In reality, however, it is probably much more common for individual proglottids to 'cross- fertilise' - inseminating other, nearby proglottids on the same tapeworm 'chain' and/or even proglottids located on completely separate tapeworms (i. This makes for a better spread of tapeworm genes and lessens the degree of in- breeding. When a proglottid enlarges and develops to a certain stage, becoming sexually mature, gametes (essentially sperm) from the male testicular components of the proglottidsegment fertilize the eggs (female) present within that or a nearby proglottid segment (as mentioned before, there can be cross- fertilisation from proglottid to proglottid). The newly fertilized tapeworm eggs matureinside of the proglottid, developing embryos inside of them, and the proglottid continues to grow in size. A proglottid that contains fertilized eggs inside is said to be . 3/29/2017 0 Comments Top 20 Ways To Lose WeightEasy and Fast Weight Loss Tips That Work. We're not kidding. It was shown to be safe and to preserve residual insulin secretion in subjects with late- onset autoimmune diabetes of adulthood (LADA) (7). A subsequent phase II trial in recent- onset T1. D showed significant preservation of residual insulin secretion and a GAD- specific immune response, both humoral and cell mediated (8). Currently, phase III studies are ongoing in Europe and the United States. ![]() ![]() The patients in all these trials were selected on the basis of elevated GAD6. The formulation is crucial to Dyamid's GAD drug because 1) adjuvant reduces the required quantity of antigen and 2) aluminum salts preferentially induce a humoral rather than cellular immune response (2. Non- antigen- Specific Intervention Trials in T1. DSince autoimmunity is the main effector mechanism in T1. D, many intervention trials have used drug regimens to silence and/or modulate the immune response, preferably without negative effects on Tregs (Table 4). These immune- suppressive regimens will also prove valuable, if not critical, for the success of islet transplants and/or . Cyclosporine A inhibits calcineurin, which is responsible for the activation of IL- 2 transcription. The lack of IL- 2 and other cytokines reduces the function of effector T cells, but unfortunately also of Tregs. Cyclosporine treatment induced remission of T1. D, but its chronic use was suspended because of unacceptable side effects (2. However, this limited success indicated that immunosuppression can reduce the autoimmune inflammation in T1. D. Dia. Beta- cell preservation was associated with IL- 1. T- cell proliferation after treatment (2. But so far, no Dia. Pep. 27. 7- specific Tregs have been characterized in mice or humans. However, while a phase III study is ongoing in adults, no treatment effect was observed in children with T1. D (2. 40). An important class of biological immune modulators comprises antibodies that target receptors on T cells. For example, Fc. R- non- binding anti- CD3 monoclonal antibodies (m. Abs) have shown the most promising results so far in T1. D therapy. Anti- CD3 m. Ab acts at various levels. It causes a short- term internalization of the TCR- CD3 complex that makes the cell “blind” to antigen (8. Also, it alters TCR- mediated signal transduction so that anergy or apoptosis is induced preferentially in activated Th. The apoptosis is partially mediated by CD9. CD9. 5L interactions with neighboring T cells. This might explain why effector T- cell death is most dramatic where the T- cell density is highest, i. Moreover, anti- CD3 treatment also results in Treg development (4. It is thought that the Tregs may protect against damage by effector T cells long after the drug has been eliminated from the body. To obtain all these effects, optimal dosage is crucial. Too little m. Ab causes insufficient modulation and Treg generation, whereas too much m. Ab could lead to stimulation of the effector T cells and cytokine release. Multiple clinical trials have been initiated and were based on two different antibodies, both fully humanized Ig. G1, nonmitogenic and specific to human CD3 (Table 4): Teplizumab (United States trials) and TRX4/Otelixizumab (European trials) (5. Teplizumab halted progression of recent- onset T1. D for more than 1 year in most patients (phase II). Three years after treatment, the patients continued to have better preservation of C- peptide levels and a lower use of insulin compared with control groups (1. TRX4/Otelixizumab also preserved beta- cell function very efficiently and decreased the insulin requirements drastically, even 1. However, none of these treatments achieved euglycemia. The European study also revealed two side effects. First, anti- idiotypic antibodies were detected 2–3 wk after injection of the drug. This should only become a problem when repeated treatment is needed. Second, there was reactivation of Epstein- Barr virus, but this was transient, self- limiting, and isolated (2. Other approaches using polyclonal anti- T cell antibody (ALS) (3. ATG) might be able to temporarily eliminate a larger proportion of T cells from the bloodstream. In NOD mice, murine ATG can prevent diabetes in a late stage and can induce Tregs (3. It is unclear whether ATG will be as efficient as anti- CD3 (3. Treatment of T1. D patients with r. ATG (ATG- Fresenius) prolonged the honeymoon period and improved the stimulated C- peptide levels up to 1. Consequently, ATG monotherapy is now tested in a phase II trial, the Study of Thymoglobulin to Arrest T1. D (START). But ATG treatment also carries risks. ATG can cause cytokine release syndrome and maybe even a lymphopenia- induced outgrowth of autoreactive T cells, as was shown for other depletion- based immunosuppression (2. Combination treatment with equine ATG and prednisone, a steroid that can counteract the cytokine release syndrome, led to a prolonged honeymoon phase in new- onset T1. D (1. 25). But most promising in the ATG trials was that some subjects went into complete remission and were insulin independent for at least 1 mo. An immunomodulatory drug adopted from the transplantation arena is the CD2. Ab rituximab (Rituxan; Genentech and Biogen Idec). Rituximab aims to deplete a potentially potent antigen- presenting population of B cells without affecting long- lived antibody- producing plasma cells (1. Data from NOD mice clearly show that B cells are required for T1. D (3. 88). A phase II clinical trial showed some preservation of C- peptide levels for 3–6 mo (3. B cells also contribute to pathogenesis in human T1. D. However, the efficacy is small compared with anti- CD3 treatments (1. Perhaps Ocrelizumab, a humanized anti- CD2. RA (1. 54), might increase efficacy of B- cell depletion in T1. D. Anti- CD2. 5 m. Abs such as basiliximab (chimeric mouse- human monoclonal antibody) and daclizumab (humanized Ig. G1 m. Ab) do not cause a cytokine release syndrome. Therefore, they are increasingly being used in place of ATG as an induction therapy. However, in T1. D, anti- CD2. Abs are only used in combination therapies (see below). Another class of targets consists of costimulatory molecules. CTLA- 4- Ig (Abatacept), CTLA- 4 fused to an immunoglobulin chain, interferes with costimulation of T cells. Classically, CD2. B7 interactions mediate costimulation and significantly enhance peripheral T- cell responses. In contrast, CTLA- 4, interacting with the same B7 molecules, dampens T- cell activity. So, CTLA- 4- Ig likely mediates its profound effects by preventing positive costimulation of CD2. B7 during activation. This results in limited clonal expansion, induction of passive cell death, and IDO production in APCs (reviewed in Refs. The safety profile of CTLA- 4- Ig treatment might be better than other immunosuppressive agents, because CTLA- 4- Ig does not deplete T cells. However, because of the role of CD2. Treg development and survival (3. CTLA- 4- Ig may negatively affect Tregs. That said, CTLA- 4- Ig therapy did not affect Tregs in renal transplantation (1. CTLA- 4- Ig monotherapy is currently in a phase II clinical trial (data not published). Moreover, a high- affinity variant of CTLA4- Ig (LEA2. Y, belatacept) (2. I/II trial (NCT0. And the LEA2. 9Y Emory Edmonton Protocol (LEEP, NCT0. II clinical trial combines CTLA- 4- Ig with daclizumab or basiliximab (against acute transplant rejection) and mycophenolate mofetil (maintenance immunosuppressive therapy). Manipulation of cytokines has seen a revival recently. Both the cytokines that affect T- cell responses (e. IL- 2, IL- 1. 5) and the cytokines that play a role in inflammation and beta- cell death are considered as targets. The 2016 Triumph Street Twin delivers. 2017 Triumph Street Triple RS. Triumph Speed Triple R First Ride I’m sure it’s part of a Sesame Street sing along – “R is for Race.” I’ve known this since I was a wee tike; I think we all have. The common train of thought behind the addition of an R to a motorcycle model’s moniker is that with that single letter comes a slew of parts to create a “race” version of its former soft- shelled and pudgy self. Always the R is more desirable to the hardcore moto- fiends, but usually with that all- important consonant and all it promises comes some trade- offs – a stiff ride, finicky engine performance and a significantly lighter wallet. Absolutely, just about every time. Triumph Street Triple R.I was surprised by the choice for a streetfighter introduction, but it’s not often a manufacturer would choose a track that doesn’t suit its machine. Choosing Jerez shows that Triumph is confident that the R is race ready; maybe it deserves a Double R designation? If you didn’t see the tops of the Ohlins NIX3. R you would not be able to tell the difference between this souped up model and the everyman’s version. The layout is roomy and comfortable with wide bars and sensibly placed footpegs. Tossing it side- to- side while sitting still on Jerez’s pitlane gives little evidence to the four- and- a- half- pound weight loss. Dipping into the first two right hand corners the Speed Triple R feels light and flickable, much more so than the non- R model. Turn- in effort at speed is surprisingly quick, and changing direction is a snap. This is where the lighter PVM wheels and their lower inertia shine. The R feels 1. 5 to 2. It is truly amazing the difference a set of wheels can make. At the front the level of feel from the NIX3. Out back the. TTX3. I got with my body position or throttle application. The Ohlins combo was so dialed that not one journalist asked for a change, not even a click. That’s right, this is almost unheard of, especially for me. My plus 2. 00- pound weight tends to tax a rear shock, inducing wallowing and bucking when pushed hard when leaned over. Not even a whimper from the golden goodies. The only complaint I had, and I’m really nit- picking here, was a bit of a front end wiggle when getting out of the gas after accelerating hard down the shorter chutes. I feel this had more to do with the wide bars and my body input than a suspension issue. It was just a reminder that you were hauling ass on a streetfighter. Under heavy load with the throttle to the stop, shifting was difficult and almost down right stubborn especially between second and third. In order to not miss a shift, I had to chop the throttle more than would be expected while stabbing the clutch. Once I had the routine figured out, it was more an annoyance than a huge problem. Nowhere else on the track did I have any trouble with the gearbox, and I will say that it is improved over the standard Speed Triple. The power was mighty but not grabby. Feel from the lever was exceptional and communicated with the front end like other brakes can’t. I found myself braking later and leaning over further before completely releasing pressure on the binders than I have ever had previously on the track. The level of grip and consistency of feel from the SPs is almost unbelievable; they really do feel like track- only race rubber. However, all the negatives that usually come along with that R are not present in the Speed Triple R. Raising the track prowess of this motorcycle really hasn’t changed the everyday comfort and usability that make the Speed Triple such a wonderful bike to live with day in and day out. Dolphins are a widely distributed and diverse group of aquatic mammals. They are an informal grouping within the order Cetacea, excluding whales and porpoises, so to zoologists the grouping is paraphyletic. The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust. Habitat and Distribution. Fraser's Dolphin Ecology. Range: Tropical waters usually between 30. Usual Habitat: Relatively deep, offshore waters but sometimes found in deep, coastal. ![]() The dolphins comprise the extant families Delphinidae (the oceanic dolphins), Platanistidae (the Indian river dolphins), Iniidae (the new world river dolphins), and Pontoporiidae (the brackish dolphins), and the extinct Lipotidae (baiji or Chinese river dolphin). There are 4. 0 extant species of dolphins. Dolphins, alongside other cetaceans, belong to the clade Cetartiodactyla with even- toed ungulates. Their closest living relatives are the hippopotamuses, having diverged about 4. Dolphins range in size from the 1. Maui's dolphin to the 9. Threats to whales and dolphins. Together we can make the world's oceans safe for. Several species exhibit sexual dimorphism, in that the males are larger than females. They have streamlined bodies and two limbs that are modified into flippers. Though not quite as flexible as seals, some dolphins can travel at 5. Dolphins use their conical shaped teeth to capture fast moving prey. They have well- developed hearing which is adapted for both air and water and is so well developed that some can survive even if they are blind. Some species are well adapted for diving to great depths. They have a layer of fat, or blubber, under the skin to keep warm in the cold water. Although dolphins are widespread, most species prefer the warmer waters of the tropic zones, but some, like the right whale dolphin, prefer colder climates. Dolphins feed largely on fish and squid, but a few, like the killer whale, feed on large mammals, like seals. Male dolphins typically mate with multiple females every year, but females only mate every two to three years. Calves are typically born in the spring and summer months and females bear all the responsibility for raising them. Mothers of some species fast and nurse their young for a relatively long period of time. Dolphins produce a variety of vocalizations, usually in the form of clicks and whistles. Dolphins are sometimes hunted in places like Japan, in an activity known as dolphin drive hunting. Besides drive hunting, they also face threats from bycatch, habitat loss, and marine pollution. Dolphins have been depicted in various cultures worldwide. Dolphins occasionally feature in literature and film, as in the film series Free Willy. Dolphins are sometimes kept in captivity and trained to perform tricks, but breeding success has been poor and the animals often die within a few months of capture. The term mereswine (that is, . Porpoises belong to the family Phocoenidae and share a common ancestry with the Delphinidae. Male dolphins are called . They are sometimes called blackfish. In captivity, a bottlenose and a rough- toothed dolphin produced hybrid offspring. The wolphin is a fertile hybrid. Two wolphins currently live at the Sea Life Park in Hawaii; the first was born in 1. Wolphins have also been observed in the wild. They are related to the Indohyus, an extinct chevrotain- like ungulate, from which they split approximately 4. These ancient whales are the predecessors of modern whales, stretching back to their first ancestor that spent their lives near (rarely in) the water. Likewise, the archaeocetes can be anywhere from near fully terrestrial, to semi- aquatic to fully aquatic, but what defines an archaeocete is the presence of visible legs or asymmetrical teeth. Major anatomical changes include the hearing set- up that channeled vibrations from the jaw to the earbone which occurred with Ambulocetus 4. Protocetus, the migration of the nasal openings toward the top of the cranium and the modification of the forelimbs into flippers which occurred with Basilosaurus 3. In October 2. 00. Japan; it had small fins on each side of its genital slit, which scientists believe to be an unusually pronounced development of these vestigial hind limbs. Dolphin skulls have small eye orbits, long snouts, and eyes placed on the sides of its head. Dolphins range in size from the 1. Maui's dolphin to the 9. Overall, however, they tend to be dwarfed by other Cetartiodactyls. Several species have female- biased sexual dimorphism, with the females being larger than the males. These conical teeth are used to catch swift prey such as fish, squid or large mammals, such as seal. Dolphins have rather small, unidentifiable spouts. This blubber can help with buoyancy, protection to some extent as predators would have a hard time getting through a thick layer of fat, and energy for leaner times; the primary usage for blubber is insulation from the harsh climate. Calves, generally, are born with a thin layer of blubber, which develops at different paces depending on the habitat. They have fundic and pyloric chambers. These flippers contain four digits. Although dolphins do not possess fully developed hind limbs, some possess discrete rudimentary appendages, which may contain feet and digits. Dolphins are fast swimmers in comparison to seals who typically cruise at 9. The fusing of the neck vertebrae, while increasing stability when swimming at high speeds, decreases flexibility, which means they are unable to turn their heads. Some species log out of the water, which may allow them to travel faster. Their skeletal anatomy allows them to be fast swimmers. All species have a dorsal fin to prevent themselves from involuntarily spinning in the water. In addition to their streamlined bodies, some can slow their heart rate to conserve oxygen. Some can also re- route blood from tissue tolerant of water pressure to the heart, brain and other organs. Their hemoglobin and myoglobin store oxygen in body tissues and they have twice the concentration of myoglobin than hemoglobin. In humans, the middle ear works as an impedance equalizer between the outside air's low impedance and the cochlear fluid's high impedance. In dolphins, and other marine mammals, there is no great difference between the outer and inner environments. Instead of sound passing through the outer ear to the middle ear, dolphins receive sound through the throat, from which it passes through a low- impedance fat- filled cavity to the inner ear. The dolphin ear is acoustically isolated from the skull by air- filled sinus pockets, which allow for greater directional hearing underwater. This melon consists of fat, and the skull of any such creature containing a melon will have a large depression. This allows dolphins to produce biosonar for orientation. As well as this, the eyes of a dolphin are placed on the sides of its head, so their vision consists of two fields, rather than a binocular view like humans have. When dolphins surface, their lens and cornea correct the nearsightedness that results from the refraction of light; they contain both rod and cone cells, meaning they can see in both dim and bright light, but they have far more rod cells than they do cone cells. Dolphins do, however, lack short wavelength sensitive visual pigments in their cone cells indicating a more limited capacity for color vision than most mammals. They also have glands on the eyelids and outer corneal layer that act as protection for the cornea. However, some have preferences between different kinds of fish, indicating some sort of attachment to taste. Comparing species' relative intelligence is complicated by differences in sensory apparatus, response modes, and nature of cognition. Furthermore, the difficulty and expense of experimental work with large aquatic animals has so far prevented some tests and limited sample size and rigor in others. Compared to many other species, however, dolphin behavior has been studied extensively, both in captivity and in the wild. See cetacean intelligence for more details. Social behavior. Dolphins are highly social animals, often living in pods of up to a dozen individuals, though pod sizes and structures vary greatly between species and locations. In places with a high abundance of food, pods can merge temporarily, forming a superpod; such groupings may exceed 1,0. Membership in pods is not rigid; interchange is common. Dolphins can, however, establish strong social bonds; they will stay with injured or ill individuals, even helping them to breathe by bringing them to the surface if needed. The dolphin Moko in New Zealand has been observed guiding a female Pygmy Sperm Whale together with her calf out of shallow water where they had stranded several times. Dolphins also use nonverbal communication by means of touch and posturing. In May 2. 00. 5, a discovery in Australia found Indo- Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) teaching their young to use tools. They cover their snouts with sponges to protect them while foraging. This knowledge is mostly transferred by mothers to daughters, unlike simian primates, where knowledge is generally passed on to both sexes. Using sponges as mouth protection is a learned behavior. The older a male dolphin is, the more likely his body is to be covered with bite scars. Male dolphins engage in acts of aggression apparently for the same reasons as humans: disputes between companions and competition for females. Acts of aggression can become so intense that targeted dolphins sometimes go into exile after losing a fight. Male bottlenose dolphins have been known to engage in infanticide. Dolphins have also been known to kill porpoises for reasons which are not fully understood, as porpoises generally do not share the same diet as dolphins and are therefore not competitors for food supplies. Males have two slits, one concealing the penis and one further behind for the anus. Two mammary slits are positioned on either side of the female's genital slit. Sexual encounters may be violent, with male dolphins sometimes showing aggressive behavior towards both females and other males. Fish and squid are the main food, but the false killer whale and the orca also feed on other marine mammals. Orcas on occasion also hunt whale species larger than themselves. Type I contain predominantly large irregularly shaped granules, whereas type II and type III lactotrophs contain smaller spherical granules. We have previously shown that oestradiol and testosterone exert a rapid stimulatory effect selectively on type II lactotrophs but it is not known how the lactotroph subtypes respond to peptide secretagogues.
