How To Treat Diarrhea In Toddlers (Age 1- 4 Years Old)Be ready, as the following information about your child’s poop may make your stomach turn, but it is the truth about toddler diarrhea. How common is toddler? Should I be worried? What are the possible causes for a toddler to have diarrhea? What are the symptoms of toddler’s diarrhea? How can I treat my toddler’s diarrhea? Is it okay to give my toddler an adult anti- diarrhea medication? Can my toddler continue with breastmilk when having diarrhea? What else can I do to take care of my child? When should I take my toddler to see the doctor? How common is toddler. Whether its food related, a virus, or a multitude of other reasons, it happens more frequently in toddlers than in adults. It is relatively safe if a child has diarrhea, but concerns arise if the child is not able to keep anything down or the symptoms persist for a week. Colored stool: what are they? Should I be worried? The color of the stools is greatly influenced by what your child eats, as well as the amount of bile (the yellow- green fluid that digests fats) in the stool. Normal stools of toddlers who are eating table foods and nursing can have stools that range from brown to orange to yellow or green. The following are the breakdowns of each colored stool and what it means: Bright red stool could be beets, red Jell- O, cherries, or cranberries. It is usually not alarming unless it is frank red blood. This usually is the outside rectum more than inside. If blood is the source, call the doctor. It is a good idea if you see red streaks to call the doctor. Beyond that, have the child drink more water or watered down juice. Foods to incorporate are raisins, cut up grapes, blueberries, prunes, beans, and broccoli. After that, tarry black lumps could signal bleeding. Though, if your child has been into Oreos, black licorice, grape juice and medicines like iron and Pepto- Bismol, this may also be the source. How to decipher black and dark green is to put a smear on a paper towel and smear it. If the stool is dark green, see green stool, if truly black and not from Oreos and licorice, call the doctor. This syndrome, may also be accompanied by bouts of constipation. Though less common in toddlers, it does happen. A high fiber diet will help with irritable bowel syndrome. If your child is diagnosed with IBS, medication is also an option. Children who are on a milk only diet may also have light grey stool. If these are not the reason your toddler has chalk white, light grey, or pale stool it may be a sign of a blocked bile duct, and a reason to contact the pediatrician. This may show mild gluten intolerance or celiac disease. Pale and really, really nasty smelling and/or fatty, that may suggest celiac disease or a mild gluten intolerance. Talk to your doctor about seeing a pediatric gastroenterologist, a doctor who specializes in the gut. If the toddler is taking iron, the poop may be green as well. Bile from rotavirus or viruses very similar to rotavirus may cause this as well. This will also make the stool very stinky. Most parents say that the stool smell literally makes them gag. If you do not believe the stool is green because of food, call the doctor. What are the possible causes for a toddler to have diarrhea? Common causes of toddler diarrhea can range from eating greasy foods, fried foods, viruses, ear infection, medications, drinking too much juice, food allergies, or food poisoning. Generally speaking, a viral infection is usually the main culprit for your child’s diarrhea. Rarely is it caused by a parasite, but it has happened. Symptoms of a virus (also called viral gastroenteritis infection) can include vomiting, stomach ache, headache and fever. This can last for 5- 1. An ear infection can sometimes be the cause of diarrhea. If this is the cause, you will notice the child pulling on one or both ears, and may complain of ear pain. Antibiotics can also cause diarrhea. Whenever your child has to take a medication, be sure to find out what possible side effects are. This way, if it is from a medication, you are warned and can be prepared. Giving your toddler too much juice may also be the culprit. This occurs often in toddlers, and even has a name: Toddler’s diarrhea. It happens when a child is drinking too much juice, such as fruit juice or other juices containing high levels of fructose. Diarrhea may also be the sign of a food allergy. Not all food allergies come with swelling face, throat and tongue. Sometimes it is as “simple” as diarrhea. If the reaction is severe (such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue), call 9. If you notice that your child having diarrhea after a certain food is eaten (or even after certain drinks), discontinue and see if the symptoms continues or stops. If it stops, it is likely a food allergy, if not, there may be another reason, such as a virus or bacterial infection. A more acute case would be food poisoning. If you think your child has ingested something poisonous, call the Poison Control Center at 1- 8. What are the symptoms of toddler’s diarrhea? Symptoms are usually easy to distinguish with toddler diarrhea. The best way to diagnose diarrhea is to look at the frequency of your baby’s poops, not just the texture. One to two bowel movements a day for a toddler is considered normal. If the stool is runny or uncontrollable for the toddler, it is most likely diarrhea. If the diarrhea has vomiting associated with it, watch for signs of dehydration in the child. If diarrhea is bloody, as in red or black, call your pediatrician. Another reason to call the doctor is If your child becomes dehydrated, a real danger when your toddler is losing a lot of fluids and electrolytes through diarrhea or vomiting. Signs of dehydration include cracked lips, tearless crying, and a decrease in urination. Make sure your child is drinking plenty of fluids while he/she has diarrhea. If your child is not acting like themselves, you may want to give the doctor a call as well. How can I treat my toddler’s diarrhea? Treating diarrhea is relatively simple if you remember an acronym BRAT for the child. Though, if your child only wants to eat toast, let them, something is better than nothing and if your toddler is upset it may make them feel worse. Avoid sugary foods and fried foods because they can upset the stomach even more. Yogurts and children’s probiotic would be a great choice if your toddler doesn’t want much solid food. Some children won’t want to eat while fighting diarrhea. Continue to keep him/her hydrated with plenty of water. Keep a cup nearby the child at night and all day. If your child does not want to drink, try popsicles as well. Unless the child has an acute case of diarrhea, they probably won’t need any actual medications. Over the counter remedies such as pedialyte is sometimes recommended by doctors, but should only be given if the doctor approves. The doctor will tell you how much your child should have based on age/weight. If your toddler is really sick, cuddle with them to make them feel like everything is good. For toddlers, it is a scary moment if they vomit or have diarrhea because they do not know what is happening to them. Is it okay to give my toddler an adult anti- diarrhea medication? It is never okay to give your toddler an adult medication. If your child needs a medication, your child’s doctor (or the hospital if you are in the ER) will provide age appropriate medications as needed. According to uptodate. Medications such as antibiotics and anti- diarrhea agents are generally not necessary and could be harmful for infants or children with diarrhea. Rarely, antibiotics may be used in cases of bacterial infection when a specific cause of the diarrhea has been found or is strongly suspected, particularly after recent travel. Inappropriate use of antibiotics will not improve diarrhea. Furthermore, antibiotics can cause side effects and lead to development of antibiotic resistance. Antidiarrheal agents (including Imodium, Pepto- Bismol, and Kaopectate) are not recommended for infants or children, since the benefits do not outweigh the risks. One risk of using an anti- diarrhea agent is that it could mask worsening symptoms and delay treatment. There are “healthy” bacteria (called probiotic) that may help reduce the duration of diarrhea (by about 1. Some of these are available over- the- counter without a prescription. Can my toddler continue with breastmilk when having diarrhea? Toddlers are able to continue breastfeeding if they have diarrhea. Breastmilk are made of primarily water, which is what your child needs when they have diarrhea. Breastmilk also has mommy made probiotics for their child. This is the best time to breastfeed if anything. Though, if your child gets sick after feeding, check your diet. It is unlikely at this age that the child would have an allergy to the milk because they eat other foods as well, but if you are suspicious it does not hurt to investigate your diet. Even if mom has food poisoning, breastfeeding can continue. As long as the symptoms are confined to the gastrointestinal tract (vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps), breastfeeding should continue without interruption, as there is no risk to the baby. This is the case with most occurrences of food poisoning. What else can I do to take care of my child? Be sure to have plenty of diaper rash cream and baby powder for the sensitive areas. Having diarrhea can cause rashes on their bottoms, and it can cause major discomfort. Change the diaper often, and apply cream as necessary. If they don’t have a rash, you can apply baby powder to keep them a little cool, and pull moisture away from the bottom. Lots of cuddles would also be appropriate. At this time, your toddler doesn’t understand what is going on, but they know they don’t feel good. Cuddles from mom or dad will help ease their concerns, and will provide comfort. If you need to care for other children, preventing spread is critical. 4/29/2017 0 Comments 10 Day Diet Lean CuisineHow do some cultures stay lean while still consuming high amounts of carbohydrates? Last week I was interviewed by Ben Greenfield. Ben asked a lot of great questions which many of you have also asked over the past few months. Take a look here and see the questions Ben posed. The more insulin your pancreas needs to secrete to manage your glycemic load, the higher your average insulin levels, which is manifested by higher levels of circulating insulin at all times – fed and not fed. Higher levels of insulin lead to less fat oxidation and more fat storage (from both ingested fats AND ingested carbohydrates – de novo lipogenesis). Failure to understand this point may be one of the most significant reasons for the calories- are- everything- argument. That is, cutting calories almost always means cutting carbohydrates, cutting insulin, and cutting fat storage. In other words, they actually consume fewer total carbohydrates in most cases than a typical Westerner (and in the presence of much less sugar!). Compare the figure above with that below, showing “typical” American carbohydrate consumptive patterns: Are we eating the same amount of pasta per meal as the folks in Italy? To be clear, the science around this is not fully worked out, and much of what we speculate is based on indirect cause- and- effect inference, coupled with “sound” mechanistic reasoning and, of course, strong observation. When I go through the biochemistry of this (which is super- cool!) it will be obvious why this is true: Eat a huge excess of omega- 6 PUFA relative to omega- 3 PUFA and your blood and tissues will show a lot of AA relative to EPA and DHA. Here’s where the story goes from being “clear” to “less clear,” at least to me. There is reasonable evidence that too little EPA and DHA (omega- 3) predisposes us to certain diseases, in particular, cardiovascular disease. I don’t know (yet), but will continue to work on this. That said, there is some indirect evidence linking differential consumption of PUFA (i. Use Lean Cuisine as an alternative fast food or takeout to save hundreds of calories. Lean Cuisine meals contain a moderate. Hence, Western diets, where we don’t consume much omega- 3 PUFA, and it is very difficult to avoid omega- 6 PUFA (they show up in virtually every processed and packaged food we touch, not to mention all sauces and dressing, and even our grain- fed meat), may predispose us to greater insulin resistance and inflammation. The results were impressive. Of course not, but it was a nice way to experience the full spectrum of carbohydrate restriction. Probably, provided I don’t go back to eating sugar and stuffing my face with carbohydrates. ![]() Saturated Fats. What are saturated fats? A serious chocolate lover’s low carb ice cream recipe. I don’t mess around when it comes to healthy chocolate desserts! I often write a blog post thinking about what I have to say about a particular recipe. But today we are going to flip that on its head: what does this recipe say about me? This recipe is saying that I love deep, dark chocolate and I love rich, creamy ice cream. This recipe is saying that. This recipe is saying I am your typical woman, moody and irritable at times, and chocolate is the best way to soothe the beast. This recipe is saying that yeah, if it’s my time to go, I wouldn’t mind drowning in a big vat of dark chocolate ice cream. That’s what this recipe says about me. I was getting ready to head on vacation, I had some cream that needed using up, and I wanted something with unbelievably rich dark chocolate flavour. I wanted SERIOUS chocolate ice cream. Just pure, unadulterated chocolate. I’ve had some chocolate ice creams that have turned out lighter in both flavour and colour in the past, and I wanted to make sure I got this right. So I did some research on how to get the kind of intense chocolate I was looking for. In casting around, I found this custard- based rich chocolate ice cream recipe from my friend Joan of Chocolate, Chocolate and More and decided to make it my model. I actually made this recipe a few times before I was satisfied with it. The first time, the custard was so thick and rich after being refrigerated that it was like pudding and I could hardly pour it into the ice cream maker. It was unbelievably good and unbelievably chocolate- y, and just the right consistency coming out of the machine so it needed no time in the freezer to set. But it was almost too rich, if you can believe it, and none of us could eat more than a few bites. My kids only made it halfway through their modest servings, each of them coming up for air with glassy, chocolate- drugged eyes and full tummies. It was just too much for them and even I struggled. Yep, death by chocolate ice cream. So for the second batch, I thinned the custard with a little more cashew milk just before churning. This made it easier to get out of the bowl and into the ice cream maker, and it made for easier consumption. One could actually enjoy a proper serving without getting too full after the first bite. It’s rich and thick and every bite is a mouthful of deep, dark, creamy, cold chocolate. For those chocolate cravings that just won’t quit. Death By Chocolate Ice Cream. This will add an element of motivating peer pressure for both of you and will mean you are more likely to stick to the plan. Make your diet buddy your workout buddy too to maximize exercise adherence. Photo by Ever. Jean. Weight loss can sometimes be very elusive, even for a foodist. You already know that dieting will never give you the long term results you want, so you focus on eating real food and going to the gym. So why are you still overweight? There could be any number of reasons you aren’t reaching your goals and the best way to troubleshoot is to tackle it like a scientist. ![]() Generate a hypothesis, collect data on yourself, and test different solutions until you find what works, because the answer will be slightly different for everyone. The good news is that there are several common (but easily overlooked) mistakes that may be holding you back. Start here and your issues may resolve more easily than you think. Whatever you do, resist the temptation to go back to restrictive dieting, which makes it harder––not easier––to achieve your goals. You’re still sedentary. This one has been difficult for me in the past, despite the fact that I’ve been working out regularly since I was 1. If your job involves sitting at a desk or using a computer all day, chances are that even if you go to the gym daily you are still leading a sedentary life. Solution: Use a pedometer. Fortunately the solution doesn’t require more gym time, just a bit more standing and walking. Making sure that you reach 1. ![]() Track your activity with a pedometer like a Fitbit to be sure you’re hitting your daily goal. You’re misjudging your portion sizes. Humans, especially dieters, are notorious for misjudging portion sizes––specifically large portion sizes. Research has shown that while we are decent at judging the calories in smaller dishes, we vastly underestimate the number of calories in larger portions and as a result overeat much more than we realize. Solution: Keep a food journal. With practice you can get better at judging portion sizes. Even if you think you know how much you are eating take two weeks to track your food intake with a food journal and measure out and document your portion sizes. While I don’t recommend keeping this up forever (life is too short to be so neurotic), it is a great way to recalibrate your expectations of what appropriate portion sizes should look like. Most of us can feel completely satisfied eating 2. Using smaller plates can help as well, but with the huge portions of food most of us are served outside the home it is better to get good at judging portions without relying on your personal dishware. You aren’t tracking your habits. Despite our best intentions, it is surprisingly difficult for us to be honest with ourselves about our behaviors. ![]() ![]() You may believe you don’t eat much bread every week, cook nutritious and diverse foods at home on a regular basis, and stick to a reasonable number of cocktails when you go out on weekends, but it is easier than you think to slip into a rut and neglect your home court habits for days or even weeks on end. Solution: Use the Lift app. The more I track my habits using the Lift app, the more I realize how fluid my regular habits can be. What is scary is that even though I am well aware of how important habits are to my health, without regular tracking I would honestly have no idea how my habits evolve and wouldn’t be able to adjust as rapidly when mindlessness gets the better of me. What’s nice about Lift is that it doesn’t feel obsessive, like calorie counting or portion measuring. I’ve created dozens of interesting habits I try to maintain in my healthstyle including trying new foods, eating fermented foods, meditation and shopping at the farmers market. Simply checking them off my list each day has been an incredibly powerful way to stay on track. More Weight Loss Workouts: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list. Losing weight takes more than desire. Why is it so easy for me to forget that mushrooms are awesome? Turns out there’s an app for that. You’re insulin resistant. If you have more than 2. When you are insulin resistant your body is more inclined to store the calories you eat as fat rather than burn them as fuel. 15 Teeny Tiny Changes To Lose Weight Faster Here's how to lose weight with just one easy tweak to your routine per week By Alyssa Shaffer February 25, 2014. Write down what you eat for one week and you will lose weight. Studies found that people who keep food diaries wind up eating about 15 percent less food than those. This means you can gain weight eating types and amounts of food that a person with a healthy metabolism could eat without consequence. Such a bummer. Solution: Try the foodist recalibration. Fortunately, insulin resistance can usually be improved with a low- carbohydrate diet and exercise. Though I do not recommend restrictive dieting as a long term solution for weight control, the temporary foodist recalibration for 2- 8 weeks can help restore insulin sensitivity and improve metabolism. I’ve even created a special group in the Lift app to help. For the full explanation of the recalibration and how to transition to life- long weight maintenance check out my book, Foodist. You’re working out too much. Back in the day before I became a foodist, I had a serious working out problem. I’d wake up at 5am every school day and go to they gym for two hours before heading to class, then I’d spend countless hours on “long runs” every weekend trying to burn more calories. The problem is that while exercise definitely improves health, it also promotes hunger. Too much exercise can therefore be a barrier to weight loss for some people, because it makes it nearly impossible to control your appetite. Solution: Chill out. I absolutely recommend making time for exercise, even formal gym time and weight training, as part of your regular healthstyle. However, if exercise is taking up a huge amount of your time and you still aren’t losing weight, try chilling out a bit and focusing more on walking 1. K steps per day rather than spending more time in the gym. I imagine you will enjoy it. You don’t chew. Practicing mindful eating is still the best way I’ve found to slow down, eat less, and enjoy my food more. The problem is that it’s really hard to do. ![]() One way to address this issue is to focus on something concrete that forces you to pay attention to the food in your mouth. This is where chewing can help. Solution: Count your chews. Counting your chews for each bite is an easy way to refocus your attention on your eating and consciously slow down. I recommend chewing each bite 2. If you have trouble remembering to chew, try putting your fork down between each bite. I have a rule that if I am in the process of stabbing food with my fork to prepare another bite I ask myself if there is food in my mouth already. If there is, I am reminded to set down my fork and focus on what I’m already eating. This practice alone could change your life, and has already done so for many of my readers. You aren’t sleeping enough. Our brains and bodies rely tremendously on a variety of hormones that regulate when we eat and sleep. Because of these circadian rhythms, we function optimally when we eat our meals, sleep and wake at the same time each day. ![]() Similarly, too little sleep has been associated with weight gain. Solution: Prioritize sleep. Getting on a regular schedule and getting enough sleep is a key component of your healthstyle. Developing good sleep habits and prioritizing sleep may help you get back on track. Your diet is too strict. Telling yourself you can’t eat this or that particular food is one of the most effective ways to guarantee you’ll overeat it in the future. Not even Adam and Eve could handle the pressure. Solution: Have it later. Research has shown that telling yourself you can eat something later is far more effective than outright denying yourself a pleasure. To your brain, having it later is almost as good as having it now. Your diet is too limited. As powerful as psychological cravings can be, biological cravings are still a real thing. Eating a nutrient dense and diverse diet helps ensure that your body is receiving a wide range of micronutrients and has everything it needs to function optimally. Solution: Eat new foods. One of my favorite healthstyle habits is regularly trying new foods and building diversity into my meals. Not only is this incredibly fun, it has also helped me reduce cravings for sugar, flour and other less- than- healthy foods that used to plague me. You believe health claims on food labels.
![]() Yes, foods that tend to be higher in fiber, protein, vitamins, calcium, omega- 3s and other trendy nutrients tend to be better for you, but that doesn’t mean that artificially adding these things to junk turns them into health food. Even worse, health claims on foods create what is known as a “health halo” that encourages people to think foods are healthier and less filling, unintentionally convincing us to eat more. Solution: Focus on ingredients. Avoid the hype by ignoring health claims and turning directly to the ingredient list. Focus on real food and real ingredients to avoid being duped. L (7. 8 mmol/L)- you will be asked to take the second test, the 1. OGTT. Even though your gestational diabetes will probably go away after your baby is born, you are at risk for gestational diabetes if you become pregnant again and for type 2 diabetes later in life. You may also have a follow- up glucose tolerance test 6 to 1. The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) measures the body's ability to use a type of sugar, called glucose, that is the body's main source of energy. If the results of this test are normal, you will still need to be screened for diabetes at least every 3 years. Secret Ways to Pass the Glucose Test Your Doctor May Not Tell You About. One in 1. 0 women will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes during her pregnancy – that's a big percent of all moms by any means. But a whole lot more will get a positive result on their glucose tolerance tests – one in two, by some estimates. This test is important, as it's often the first sign that a mom has a condition that needs extra- special care and attention throughout the rest of her pregnancy. But why the huge discrepancy between the test result and number of women who actually have the condition? Often, women test positive simply because of what they ate in the hours before the test. This happened to me with my first baby (when I was actually diagnosed with borderline GD very late in the pregnancy). So, I did a lot of research before my test with Baby #2 and discovered the following . The second time around all the tests came back completely normal, and I was complication- free. Avoid high- sugar foods shortly before the test and cut back on simple, or refined, carbs. I was completely clueless when it came to all this my first time around. I didn't know that eating a moderately sugary cereal for breakfast the morning of the glucose screening test - - which involves downing a sugar- laden drink in a matter of minutes and then getting blood drawn an hour later - - could yield a positive result and force a poor pregnant mom to go back for a longer, more brutal 3- hour version (called the glucose tolerance test). Wondering how to prepare for pregnancy, to choose a baby name, or to get your toddler to sleep? EverydayFamily is the place to be, with resources from preconception. Luckily, it came back negative.. Little did I know that was only the beginning. Chow down on healthy carbohydrates and make sure you eat a good balance of carbs and protein. This is important to do throughout the pregnancy but especially the morning of the glucose screening test. They not only enter your bloodstream more gradually than the simple ones, which cause the sugar spikes, but they can actually slow down the rate at which your body absorbs sugar. I was re- screened later in my first pregnancy and . ![]() ![]() I'm convinced it's because the second screening happened right after one of my baby showers, when I loaded up on cakes, cookies and other sweets, and because I didn't know that I should be eating a good mix of carbs and protein the morning of. Good breakfast options would be a piece of whole wheat toast with peanut butter or a plain Greek yogurt with blueberries mixed in. That's exactly what I did during my second pregnancy and the tests all came back negative. Don't make the mistake of eating nothing at all for breakfast before the shorter glucose screening. Doing so can throw your sugar levels out of whack, doctors and nutritionists later told me. It's a lesson I learned the hard way, as it's what I did when my glucose levels were re- screened a second time with Baby #1. I figured since eating breakfast hadn't helped the first time, I'd try not eating breakfast for this go- round.
It's what led me to get another negative result for the 1- hour so that I had to take the 3- hour yet again - - and what ultimately helped land me the GD diagnosis. Not fun. If you do get a positive test result but your doctor considers it to be . To avoid glucose spikes in the future, try to cut back on sugary, refined carbohydrates and load up on the healthy ones. What happened when you took the glucose test? Things to Read Next. Glucose tolerance test (GTT) in pregnancy. What is a glucose tolerance test? A glucose tolerance test, also called an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), checks how your body regulates your sugar levels. Sugar, or glucose, is found in many of the foods you eat. The test is used to diagnose diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes) and is offered to women who are thought to be most likely to develop the condition. Why might I need to take the GTT? The test will detect whether or not you have gestational diabetes. Somewhere between 1. Indian women develop gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is caused by your pancreas failing to produce enough of the hormone insulin. Insulin regulates the amount of sugar in your blood and enables your body to store sugar that isn't immediately needed for energy. Your body has to produce extra insulin to meet your baby's needs during pregnancy, especially from about five months, when he is growing rapidly. If your body isn't able to keep up, you may develop gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes doesn't always show obvious signs, which is why testing is important. If gestational diabetes isn't recognised and treated it may put you and your baby at risk of complications. The main complication of too much sugar in your blood is that your baby may grow large, which may make a vaginal birth more difficult. Who is at risk of getting gestational diabetes? You're more likely to develop gestational diabetes if. Your body mass index (BMI) is 3. You have previously given birth to a large baby weighing 4. You have had gestational diabetes before. You have a parent, sibling or child with diabetes. You have a family origin with a higher prevalence of diabetes. Unfortunately, people of South Asian descent are known to be at a higher risk of diabetes. How is the GTT done? The test is usually carried out when you're between 2. If you've had gestational diabetes before, you'll be offered the test earlier. This will be at between 1. Your doctor or nurse will tell you how long you need to fast before taking the test, though it's usually overnight. It's fine to drink water during this time. If you're taking medication, check with your doctor if it's safe to take your usual dose while you're fasting. The test will usually be done at a certified diagnostic centres or the collection centre of the hospital. When you arrive at the diagnostic centre, a nurse will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm. The first blood sample is used to measure the level of sugar in your blood when you've been fasting. This is called a baseline test. Or you may be given an energy drink instead. It's important that you drink all of the mixture. Your blood will be tested two hours after drinking the sugary drink, and the measurement will be compared with the normal range. During the two- hour wait, it's best to sit quietly. Some hospitals or centres may allow you to leave the premises, as long as you rest, but others may ask you to stay. You shouldn't eat or drink anything at this stage. But it is a good idea to take a snack with you, especially if you're driving yourself home after the test, as you're bound to feel hungry. Only eat something after your second blood sample has been taken, not before. You'll most likely receive the results of the test within 4. What other tests might I get if my doctor suspects gestational diabetes? Some doctors may recommend you to test your urine for sugar at each antenatal appointment. If there is sugar in your urine this could be a sign of gestational diabetes. Or it could just be the result of normal changes in your body during pregnancy. In earlier days, this urine test used to be routine for testing diabetes in all women during pregnancy. However, it's not thought to be the most reliable way to screen for diabetes anymore. If higher than normal sugar levels show up in your urine report, your doctor will ask you to get a GTT test. Most women who have sugar in their urine at the antenatal tests turn out to have normal blood sugar levels in the glucose tolerance test. If you are likely to develop gestational diabetes, perhaps if you've had it before, you may be asked to buy a home- testing kit. This is a simple way of monitoring your blood glucose levels if you're at risk or already have gestational diabetes. What if I do have gestational diabetes? Your treatment will depend on the levels of sugar in your blood. Your doctor will discuss your results with you. She will advise you on how to choose foods that will keep your blood sugar levels stable. You might also be asked to buy a kit to monitor your blood glucose levels at home on a more regular basis. In most cases, gestational diabetes can be kept under control by following a healthy diet and exercising. If you have gestational diabetes you will have more frequent antenatal appointments, which last longer, to check on your health and your baby's progress. You may also be offered extra ultrasound scans to check your baby's size. If your blood sugar levels are very high or unstable, or if your ultrasound scan shows your baby to be large, your doctor may prescribe tablets or more commonly, insulin injections which you'll have to inject yourself at home. Most women who develop diabetes during pregnancy give birth to healthy babies, with blood sugar levels returning to normal after the birth. You will be offered another glucose tolerance test six weeks after your baby is born to check that this is the case for you. Are you curious about the vegan diet and whether? Learn about the vegan diet dangers. Along with that goes eating foods that people have been consuming for generations. Price made the ground- breaking discovery about the link between a diet low in animal foods. Some people tend to gravitate toward a vegan diet because the included foods are “easier” to digest due to poor digestive juices. Eliminating these “problematic foods” completely and permanently only avoids the problem, instead of getting at the root issue, which is working to re- balance the body to regain tolerance of a wide variety of foods. Vegan Diet Danger #3. Ray Peat, Ph. D. Vegan Diet Danger #4: Vegan diets tend to be low in high- quality protein (and low protein diets can increase toxicity). Did you know that there is a big difference in the protein quality of animals vs. Long- term vegan diets tend to impair liver detoxification pathways leading to toxicity. Plant foods contain vitamin A precursors, such as beta- carotene that requires conversion into. However, some gene mutations can decrease ones ability to make this converstion by up to 9. Aside from genetic mutations that can impact ones ability to get real vitamin A from plant foods like carrots and sweet potatoes, there are also non- genetic factors such as poor gut health, low thyroid function, liver disease, and nutritional deficiencies that can greatly reduce your body’s ability to make this conversion. As a little reminder, vitamin A is extrememly important for thyroid function, hormone production, fertility, a healthy immune system, eye health, and fighting fatigue. Vegan Diet Danger #6 Plant- based diets can decrease digestive juices. Protein stimulates the production of HCL (hydrochloric acid) in your stomach to break down proteins. Proper digestion begins with strong stomach acid production that sets the stage for the p. H driven digestive process. Without regular and healthy stimulation of digestive juices, your digestion weakens and fewer nutrients are able to be absorbed in your body. Vegan Diet Danger #7: Dietary dogma that if it’s not working for you, you’re doing it “wrong.”Immersion in any dietary paradigm can be very powerful, and the vegan community is no exception. A 1. 0 year vegan shares her story: I remember over the years when people would go vegan and then stop because they didn’t feel well on it, I used to think to myself, . I now realize, quite humbled, that many of those problems may have been valid, even if they were doing a vegan diet . More likely I just couldn’t admit it to myself because my beliefs were so strong, constantly reaffirmed by my full- time immersion in the understandably self- reinforcing vegan culture. This can make it very. At first, you may not notice. The reality is that soy protein is very difficult to digest, thyroid suppressive and estrogenic due to phytoestrogens. It also contains high levels of phytic acid that cause less assimilation of nutrients, as well as. But there are major downfalls to heavy nut consumption. Nuts are very hard to break down, especially for those with low stomach acid. They are also very high in polyunsaturated fats, contain enzyme inhibitors, and include phytic acid? The Mediterranean diet is one that has managed to maintain popularity through changing fads, and for good reason. A number of studies have confirmed its health benefits — most of which are likely due to it being low in sugars, moderate in protein and high in fresh fruits and vegetables, along with healthy fats. Contrary to popular belief, there's actually no single . The emphasis on fresh vegetables alone makes it far healthier than the standard American diet, which is very high in processed foods. Health Benefits Associated With a Mediterranean- Style Diet. Eating a Mediterranean- style diet has been linked to a number of health benefits, including. According to recent research, adult women who ate fresh fruits, vegetables and fish less than four days a week had double the risk of adult acne. In one study, women who closely followed a Mediterranean- style diet in their 5. Mediterranean Diet Linked to Healthier Brain. Overall, the Mediterranean diet is one of the best conventional diets for brain and heart health. For example, research has shown diets rich in healthy fats from nuts, avocados and olive oil may boost memory and cognition in older adults. Previous research has also suggested a Mediterranean diet may lower your odds of Alzheimer's disease, but it wasn't clear whether the diet was responsible, or if people who eat this way also make many other healthier lifestyle choices that decrease their risk. Those following a Mediterranean diet with supplemental nuts showed significant improvement in memory, while those who got supplemental olive oil experienced significantly improved cognition. The low- fat group, on the other hand, experienced a significant decrease in both memory and cognitive function. Older Adults Suffer Less Brain Shrinkage on Mediterranean Diet. More recently, scientists found that a Mediterranean- style diet also helps reduce age- related brain shrinkage in older adults. As reported by the LA Times: 1. Even though many in the Med- diet group were far from perfect in their adherence, the average brain- volume loss differed significantly between the two groups. After all, your brain is composed of at least 6. DHA, found in seafood such as clean fish and krill oil. That said, it's important to choose your seafood wisely. Good choices include smaller fatty fish like sardines, anchovies and herring. Many of these smaller fish also contain higher amounts of omega- 3, so it's a win- win. Wild- caught Alaskan salmon is another healthy choice. If you avoid fish, it's important to take a high- quality omega- 3 supplement such as krill oil. Research from the Mayo Clinic shows diets rich in carbohydrates are associated with an 8. Omega- 3 Is Important for Other Psychiatric Conditions as Well. Animal- based omega- 3 in combination with vitamin D has also been shown to improve cognitive function and behavior associated with certain psychiatric conditions, including ADHD, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia — in part by regulating your brain's serotonin levels. The omega- 3 fat EPA reduces inflammatory signaling molecules in your brain that inhibit serotonin release from presynaptic neurons, thereby boosting your serotonin levels. DHA — which is an important structural component of your brain cells — also has a beneficial influence on serotonin receptors by increasing their access to serotonin. What these three diets have in common is an emphasis on whole foods, particularly fresh fruits and vegetables, and at least SOME healthy fats. Considering the importance of eating real food, it's not so surprising that the DASH diet, Mediterranean diet and MIND diet rank No. Benefits of the DASH Diet. The DASH diet in particular has been shown to be quite effective for lowering your risk of hypertension. However, I believe the real reason for this effect is not due to the reduction in salt but rather the reduction in processed foods, which is high in fructose. As your insulin and leptin levels rise in response to net carbs, it causes your blood pressure to increase. One 2. 01. 0 study. Hg (stage 2 hypertension). Consuming 7. 4 grams or more of fructose per day also increased the risk of a 1. In fact, uric acid is a byproduct of fructose metabolism. So, by eliminating excess sugar and fructose from your diet, you effectively address root issues that contribute to high blood pressure. If you're insulin resistant (about 8. Americans are), have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease or other chronic disease, you'd be wise to limit your fructose to 1. As for the issue of salt (which the DASH diet restricts), it's important to realize that salt is actually essential for maintaining and regulating blood pressure. The key is to use the right kind of salt. Ideally, replace all processed table salt with a natural unprocessed version, such as Himalayan salt, which contains a variety of trace minerals your body actually needs. Part of the DASH diet's effectiveness for hypertension may also have to do with the fact that it focuses on vegetables, which helps improve your sodium- to- potassium ratio. Your body needs potassium to maintain proper p. H levels in your body fluids, and it plays an integral role in regulating your blood pressure. It's actually possible that potassium deficiency may be a greater contributor to hypertension than excess sodium (but not likely a greater factor than fructose). Fats are important for so many biological processes, especially those related to your brain and heart function. In the case of the latter, a Spanish trial,2. The participants had all been diagnosed with high risk of cardiovascular disease, but were asymptomatic at the outset of the study. Participants were followed for a median of 4. The volunteers were randomly divided into three groups (two intervention groups and one control): Mediterranean diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, seafood, whole grains and mono- unsaturated fats, very low in meat and dairy and supplemented with 3. Mediterranean diet (as above) supplemented with 5. Low- fat diet (control)There were no calorie restrictions for any of the groups, nor was physical activity promoted or required. Compliance with olive oil and nut consumption was tested via blood and urine analysis. The primary end point was a composite of myocardial infarction, stroke and death from cardiovascular causes. Secondary end points were stroke, myocardial infarction, death from cardiovascular causes and death from any cause. Remarkably, in less than five years, the two intervention groups achieved a 3. No wonder they felt the trial had to be stopped for ethical reasons! Sadly, low- fat diets remain among the most accepted diets in the medical community, both for weight management and cardiac health. There's no telling how many millions of people have prematurely died from this fatally flawed and scientifically- refuted advice. Are You Eating Enough Fish? That's the largest increase in seafood consumption in two decades, yet we still fall short of dietary recommendations, which call for 8 ounces of seafood per week. Ideally, aim for two to three servings of fish like salmon or sardines, anchovies, mackerel and herring each week, to obtain healthy levels of omega- 3. Avoid canned tuna, mackerel, swordfish, grouper, marlin, orange roughy, snapper and halibut, as they have some of the highestlevels of contamination. However, most fish contain only HALF of the protein found in beef and chicken, and this is actually a very good thing. While we do need protein for muscle, bone and hormone health, eating more than your body actually needs can stimulate your mammalian target of rapamycin (m. TOR) — a pathway that plays an important role in many cancers, among other things. In fact, Valter Longo, Ph. D.,3. 0 — a professor of biological science at the University of California and a well- known longevity researcher — believes the reduced protein content in fish may be one reason why the Mediterranean diet is linked to life extension and reduced risk for chronic disease. In essence, those who eat more fish than red meat automatically get far less protein, thereby preventing the excessive stimulation of m. TOR. For Health and Longevity, Be Sure to Optimize Your Omega- 3. If you do not eat this amount of fish on a weekly basis, consider taking a daily omega- 3 supplement such as krill oil. As for dosage, the amount of omega- 3s you need depends on your body size, age, health status, the type of omega- 3 and more. Your best bet is to get an omega- 3 index test. This test measures the omega- 3 in your red blood cells, which is really the only way to determine if you're getting enough from your diet or supplements. Your index should be above 8 percent. While there's no set recommended standard dose of omega- 3 fats, some health organizations recommend a daily dose of 2. EPA and DHA for healthy adults. Higher amounts (upwards of 1,0. EPA and DHA daily) are typically recommended for the prevention of memory loss, depression and heart disease. The American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada recommend pregnant and lactating women (along with all adults) consume at least 5. EPA and DHA, daily. Other Vital Reasons Why Mediterranean- Style Diet Is a Good Choice. Aside from the important dietary components mentioned above, there are at least three other lifestyle factors that contribute to the benefits achieved by those actually living in the Mediterranean countries. The obvious one is that these are subtropical countries and most people are able to achieve a healthy level of sun exposure, as the opportunities to go outside with minimal clothing on are far more frequent than for most of us living in the U. S. The other two are related in that they are social variable. There is less reliance on cars and automated tasks that allow them to walk and be more active and mobile than many of us in the U. S. Additionally, there is an important social component to most meals that is typically not encountered in the U. |
